NORMAL – Illinois State head women’s basketball coach Barb Smith named Brittney Marshall the coordinator of basketball operations.

“I was fortunate enough to work with Brittney at Saint Louis University and saw firsthand her terrific people and excellent administrative skills,” Smith said. “Brittney is a great addition to our staff. She is a tireless worker and a committed team player. I am excited for our program. Brittney is a perfect fit.”

Marshall has five years of combined basketball experience working with collegiate and professional teams, as well as Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). She has served as the director of basketball operations twice and an interim assistant coach.

“I am extremely excited to join the staff and work with Coach Smith again,” Marshall said. “Illinois State is a very special place with rich history, and I look forward to being a part of it.”

Most recently, Marshall served as the director of basketball operations at Bucknell University for two seasons. At Bucknell, she identified key operational factors for increasing fan interaction, which resulted in increased attendance. Marshall also negotiated contracts and letters of agreements for all aspects of travel, including transportation, lodging and meals. She created, designed and implemented a yearly recruiting mailing correspondence system for prospective student-athletes based on program marketing materials. In addition, she created ‘Breakfast with the Bison’ and ‘Bison Day’, which were special events for season ticket holders and prospective student-athletes, respectively.

Prior to Bucknell, Marshall was the director of basketball operations at Saint Louis University for three seasons. At SLU, she directed all video operations, including film editing, highlight films and film exchange. Marshall also directed social media engagements and interactions, while developing professional enhancement programs and seminars for the student-athletes. She also managed the team’s community service programs and events, raising over $9,000 in association with the American Cancer Society. She managed a support staff of 11 managers and 12 male practice players, and also directed camps.

She also had brief stints with the WBCA and the Chicago Sky.

Marshall played summer basketball with the Chicago Flames along with Redbird assistant coach Erin Dickerson. Marshall provides another Chicago connection to the ISU women’s basketball program.

Marshall accepted the coordinator of basketball operations, after Mark Uitermarkt moved into the director of basketball operations role.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
