NORMAL – The man convicted of striking and killing an ISU student with his car and leaving the scene has been sentenced to six years in prison.
Joshua Dunn, 22, was also sentenced to four years of probation on several charges, including aggravated DUI involving a death. Dunn tested positive for marijuana after admitting to investigators that he used the drug.
The probation sentence was for his conviction of leaving the scene of an accident. State’s Attorney Jason Chambers said his office had pushed for a prison sentence on that charge as well.
“The time that we were asking for was, with two consecutive charges, was a total time of 18 years,” said Chambers. “So the total time of the two is far less than what we thought the case merited.”
Dunn was driving a vehicle that struck Benjamin Allison as he was walking in the crosswalk at the intersection of College and Fell Ave. in January.
Allison’s mother Melissa spoke in court before the sentenced was issued.
“My heart races, and my stomach turns, and in my head I’m screaming, why? Why did you kill my child? Why did you take that corner so fast? Why didn’t you see him? Why didn’t you stop?” Melissa said.
She also read a statement on behalf of her family following the sentencing hearing.
“We would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Advocate BroMenn Hospital. Because of their tireless effort and skill, we were given three days to say goodbye to Ben. For that we will be forever in their debt,” said Melissa. “Illinois State University and WZND have opened their hearts to us and they are now part of our family. Their support and kindness have been invaluable.”
Dunn must serve 85 percent of his prison term. He was also ordered to pay close to $13,000 in restitution to the Allison family.
