NORMAL- The Illinois State women’s basketball program will welcome Deja Turner to the team starting next season, as she signed her National Letter of Intent, it was announced Friday by head coach Barb Smith.

“Deja is a great addition to our 2016 class,” Smith said. “She is a scoring guard who is very versatile and can run the point or off-guard positions. Deja works very hard at both ends of the floor. She is very driven and committed on the court but is also successful in the classroom. Deja wants to major in nursing. We’re excited that she is a Redbird!”

Turner, who hails from Tampa, Florida, will have four years of eligibility at ISU. The 5-11 guard wrapped up a very impressive senior season at Plant High School, where she averaged 15.2 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 3.5 steals per game while helping her team to a 21-6 record.

After the season, Turner was named the recipient of the Dottie McGahagin Girls Basketball Award – the Hillsborough County Sports Awards top girls’ basketball honor – and was named First Team All-Hillsborough County by the Tampa Bay Times, the All-Hillsborough County Player of the Year and First Team All-County American Division. She is also a Principal’s Honor Roll student and will graduate with a 5.17 weighted grade point average.

Turner joins an incoming recruiting class that features Amaria Allen, Frannie Corrigan, Megan Talbot, and Morgan VanHyfte, who all signed during the fall signing period in November, and Hannah Green, who signed at the beginning of the spring signing period in April.

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
