SPRINGFIELD – Even though Donald Trump said the election is rigged against him a supporter and a person running in the election disagrees.

During a debate at the State Journal Register in Springfield, both candidates in the 18th Congressional District say they have faith in the electoral process.

Republican incumbent Darin LaHood said the United States has an election system that is the envy of the world.

“I don’t agree that the election is rigged,” LaHood said. “I have a lot of faith in the American Democratic system. I think it has worked well.”

Democrat Junius Rodriguez said there has always been a peaceful transfer of power and expects that to be the case this year.

“I am disturbed by the kind of rhetoric that we are hearing where people are talking abort how this is a rigged election and the fix is in,” Rodriguez said. “It is my hope that whatever happens on November 8 that on November 9 everyone on both sides regardless of who they voted for will be accepting of the outcome.”

Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
