BLOOMINGTON – A new Country Financial Security Index shows many Illinois students learn about finances by earning good grades.
The survey indicated a little more than half of Illinois parents pay their children for good grades. Country’s Erin Klein said it’s just one way to teach children about earning.
“Report card time isn’t the only time students are rewarded for doing well in school,” Klein said. “Rewards can give kids a sense of pride in their school work and other things and give them ownership in their own success.”
Klein said earning doesn’t have to be just about money.
“It may be more of parents looking at not just the school work, but what can they get kids to put a value to and look at income in a different way,” Klein added.
The Illinois average for an A is $7.68, about half the national average. The survey shows about 64 percent of Illinois parents who pay a reward value an A at under five bucks.
