NORMAL – For the first time in almost a decade, Illinois State University is looking for a new head coach to lead the women’s volleyball program.
Melissa Myers is resigning effective immediately so she can pursue professional opportunities outside of coaching.
In nine seasons with the Redbirds, Myers posted a record of 168-116, winning the Missouri Valley Conference regular season and tournament championships in 2014. That season, ISU went undefeated in the conference and put together a school-record 23-match winning streak.
In her final year, Myers led the Birds to a 17-15 overall record and 9-9 in league play.
Myers is behind only Julie Morgan and Linda Herman in victories as head coach.
“It has certainly been a difficult decision for me, and while I have enjoyed coaching for nearly 20-years, I feel it’s important to get closer and prioritize my family and pursue professional opportunities outside of the coaching profession,” said Myers in a prepared statement.
Illinois State Athletic Director Larry Lyons said, “Melissa is a wonderful, genuine person who is thought of very highly in our department.”
“While she is a tremendous role model and mentor for the young women in our volleyball program, she has grown into a really strong head coach who is very well respected in the MVC,” Lyons also said.
A national search will begin immediately for Myers’ replacement.
