BLOOMINGTON – A University of Illinois professor of religious history in America is part of a crowded field of five Democrats who want to replace incumbent Republican Central Illinois Congressman Rodney Davis.

Jon Ebel said religion influences his progressive political views. He says he’s a Christian and his wife is Jewish.

“I approach policy questions thinking about how are they going to make the world a better place? How are they going to help the needy? How are they going to heal the sick? How are they going to lift up the widow and the orphan? These are things that to me, are central to my faith, as it ought to be lived,” said Ebel.

Ebel told WJBC’s Sam Wood he would rip up the GOP’s tax reform plan, and perhaps set it on fire.

“It’s awful morally. It’s redistributing wealth up the income ladder, which is exactly the opposite of what we should be doing. It’s also wrong historically,” the candidate said.

Ebel said what sets him apart from the other candidates is that he’s a veteran. He said people in the military learn how to team up successfully with an ideologically diverse group of people.

Ebel is running for the 13th District Congressional seat which includes portions of McLean County and all of DeWitt and Piatt Counties.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
