BLOOMINGTON – A local restaurant manager said Wednesday he’s humbled and overwhelmed by the community’s response to his idea of opening his doors as a warming center for the homeless.

Scott Allen of Clinton, general manager at Applebee’s on Veterans Parkway and Eastland Drive, said four men and three women took advantage of his offer for some hot food Tuesday night.

The word got out among filled-to-capacity shelters and to local police that Applebee’s was providing food and a place to stay.

Allen said a homeless man planned to stay the night, but thanks to donations, Allen arranged for other accommodations.

“Since we had money donated to us, we bought him a hotel room, so that he had a bed and a hot shower,” said Allen.

“That was nice because the community was able to help out and donate some money. We called one of the hotels here, and we drove him over and made sure he had a room to stay in.”

Allen said Lyft drivers who patronize the restaurant offered to give people free rides. Others donated coats and scarves, and he said an 11-year old girl made about 30 to 40 survival packs, including a first aid kit, a toothbrush and deodorant. Allen said unused items will be donated to the Salvation Army and area churches.

Allen said he’s found the community deeply cares for people in need.

“There is so much negativity going on in the world, and in media in general, that people are ready for some ‘feel good’ stories, some stories of positivity,” Allen said.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
