Illinois senators back high-speed rail panel

CHICAGO (AP) _ State senators have approved a proposal to set up a High Speed Rail Commission for Illinois. One of the main tasks of the body would be to draw up detailed roadmaps of how to design, build and operate a high-speed network with train zooming around the state at speeds of 150 mph or more. Plans that have already landed some state and federal money are far more modest. They foresee trains traveling between major Illinois cities reaching top speeds of no more than 110 mph.
     
Most experts argue that only trains running at speeds of 150 mph or more can truly be called high-speed trains. Currently, only California and Florida have plans to construct systems that reach those speeds. The proposed commission still requires the approval of the Illinois House.
