Task force calls for changes in pre-need oversight

A state task force wants to strip the state comptroller's office of any power regulating the pre-need funeral industry, even though the panel doesn't single out that office for the collapse of a more-than-$100 million trust fund. The task force recommends the industry fall under the control of the Department of Financial Professional Regulation. Comptroller Dan Hynes has taken heat for not noticing the fund's downfall, but State Representative Dan Brady, who co-chaired the panel, says the report doesn't assign blame.

Brady says he also suspects that politics were involved in their group's final report being delayed until after the February primary when Hynes was running for governor. Brady has proposed a bill for the changeover to become law.
