The Dry Grove 4-H club will learn about farm safety at its meeting Tuesday, Feb.
21 at Hoeft Farms in Bloomington, Ill. Rachel Hoeft, ADM outreach coordinator,
will teach kids the importance of chemical safety as well as other potential
hazards on the farm.
Between 1995 and 2000, nearly 700 youth were killed on
farms and ranches in the United States, according to the Journal of Safety
Research.
“Chemicals are particularly dangerous,” said Hoeft. “Motor oil
looks like maple syrup. No one thinks of household chemicals as hazardous
either. Windex looks an awful lot like blue sports drinks. In an unmarked
container, these solutions are dangerous.”
Hoeft partners with Farm Safety 4
Just Kids to offer safety education for youth across the state. Farm Safety 4
Just Kids was founded over 20 years ago by Marilyn Adams after the death of her
son in a gravity flow grain wagon accident. The organization has promoted a safe
farm environment to prevent injuries and death by educating our youth for 25
years.
