Gay and lesbian supporters say tomorrow will be a monumental day in Illinois history. It will be the first day civil unions will be recognized by state law. Dave Bentlin with the Advocacy Council for Human Rights in McLean County said the new law has sparked a lot of conversation. He said the next big step will be trying to legalize gay marriage.
“I think it’s a meaningful moment for a lot of people though and whether they’re the first or last tomorrow, it doesn’t make a difference because they are there and they’re able to legalize their commitment to each other.”
McLean County Clerk Kathy Michael said she hasn’t seen a surge of gay and lesbian couples applying for a civil union license. Appointments could be set up by calling 888-5190.
