CHICAGO (AP) – Governor Quinn says the state will aggressively pursue federal aid for southern Illinois residents impacted by flooding.
Quinn made the pledge yesterday during a visit to flood-ravaged areas near Metropolis. During the visit, Quinn met with city and county officials to discuss the flood’s impact and plans for recovery.
State Treasurer Dan Rutherford is also touring flood-damaged parts of Southern Illinois to announce disaster recovery loans will be made available to flood victims.
Quinn said thanks to the Illinois National Guard and local and state responders and volunteers, significant help has already been given to communities battling one of the worst floods ever to hit the region.
State officials say more than 450 National Guard troops, 1,000 state responders and countless volunteers gave critical assistance to efforts to hold back waters in 11 counties.
Quinn says with flood levels still high, people should stay out of evacuated areas until it’s safe to return.
