Weather key to grain markets right now

A weather premium came into the marketplace late last week before localized rains helped some farm fields over the weekend.

The rain that came over the weekend was spotty, with some producers missing precipitation completely.  The longer term outlook cooled temperatures down and put some moisture in the forecast for the end of May.

3 Redbirds named All-MVC baseball First Team

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Three Redbird baseball players were named to the 2012 All-Missouri Valley Conference First Team, and five received honorable mention accolades, as voted on by the league’s eight head coaches, and announced by the league office Monday evening

Normal oks Amtrak parking deck charge, with free option

NORMAL - Normal's Town Council approved the $8 daily parking fee for Amtrak users, but City Manager Mark Peterson said there will be a free option available.

He said the town will, in the short term, provide the top level of the College Avenue Parking Deck free for long term parking. He said he did hear from members of the public who want a free option.

Dry weather keeps planters moving

Illinois farmers planted 3.2 million acres of soybeans last week, according to Brad Schwab, chief crop statistician with the Illinois Field Office of the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Above normal temperatures and no rainfall across the state gave farmers ideal conditions for planting.  Soybean planting progressed 36 percentage points in one week, now at 80 percent complete.  That's compared to 38 percent last year and the five-year average of 37 percent.  Forty percent of the soybeans have emerged.

CornBelters manager Parker confident in new team

BLOOMINGTON - After two games, new CornBelters manager Chad Parker is settling in with his team.

Normal won its 2012 opener 5-1 on Friday, before falling to Windy City 7-2 on Saturday. The third game of the series was postponed.

McEvoy on Sports: More Illinois State basketball changes

Illinois State University Professor of Sport Management Chad McEvoy joined WJBC's R.C. McBride and Jim Fitzpatrick to discuss recent changes to the ISU basketball team since the hiring of new head coach Dan Muller.

Last week, it was confirmed that Anthony Beane Sr. will join the Salukis as an assistant coach next season. His son, Anthony Beane Jr., has been released from his National Letter of Intent to play with the Redbirds.  Today it was officially announced that former Redbird Dana Ford is now part of the Illinois State men’s basketball staff.

Quinn dismisses gambling as ‘shiny’ distraction

SPRINGFIELD - Gov. Pat Quinn says Illinois can't afford to have lawmakers distracted from crucial issues by more talk of gambling expansion.

The Chicago Democrat said leaders at the state Capitol sometimes "get distracted by shiny objects.''

Public weighs in on foreclosure panel’s ideas

BLOOMINGTON – A special Illinois Supreme Court committee is looking for public input on proposed ways to improve how lower courts handle foreclosures, just as McLean County gets its new mediation program under way.

One of the high court panel’s subcommittees has drafted 14 proposed recommendations for foreclosure mediation and mandatory preforeclosure loss mitigation.

Miller Park Zoo’s rare goat gives birth to kid

BLOOMINGTON – One of Miller Park Zoo’s rare San Clemente Island Goats has given birth to a kid.

The mother is Bella, one of four adult goats at Bloomington’s zoo. There are less than 500 San Clemente Island Goats in the world, making it a critically endangered heritage breed.

ISU students first to unearth new archeological site

Distinguished Professor Jim Skibo from the Illinois State Univeristy Department of Sociology and Anthropology and graduate student Susan Kooiman joined WJBC's R.C. McBride and Jim Fitzpatrick to discuss the annual Grand Island Archaeological Research Project.

It's a cooperative between Illinois State University and the Hiawatha National Forest in Michigan and explores more than 4,000 years of human history in sites along the small island.
