Governor Quinn has signed a bill into law that will benefit illegal immigrants looking for college funding. Quinn signed the Illinois DREAM Act, which creates a panel that will help raise private money for college scholarships.

“One thing we want to do is leave no one behind, we want to leave no talent left behind,” said Quinn.

Jennifer Carrillo with Latinos United for Change said college and university leaders helped with the initiative.

“I was personally one of the ISU students who spoke to President Bowman and asked him to support this bill and I think it’s very telling that a lot of university presidents came out to support this because they usually don’t take political action.”

The measure has nothing to do with a federal bill that has a similar name. To qualify, students must have attended an Illinois school for at least three years. They must also have at least one immigrant parent.
