Will Illinois’ online lottery impact local businesses?

Rob Karr from the Illinois Retail Merchants Association joined WJBC's R.C. McBride and Jim Fitzpatrick on Tuesday to discuss the impact of online lottery sales on local businesses.

"I do think you have to be careful anytime you pull traffic out of a store, but again we're realistic about the Internet being here," Karr said.

Members of the Illinois Association of Convenience Stores and the Illinois Retail Merchants Association recently went public with their concerns about online ticket sales.

A different view of Major League Baseball

New York Times bestselling author and former MLB pitcher Dirk Hayhurst joined WJBC's Jim Fitzpatrick to discuss his new book, "Out of My League: A Rookie's Survival in the Bigs."

"I hope when people read this book they see a candid honest player, a player that's not represented often. In this age of superstars and multimillion dollar contracts I'm a fringe guy. I write what it's like to be on the fringes hoping that long-shots payoff," Hayhurst said.

Rose: Chief Illiniwek Tweet ‘off the cuff comment’

State Representative Chapin Rose joined WJBC's Jim Fitzpatrick and Kim Wells to discuss his recent Tweet surrounding the University of Illinois' former mascot Chief Illiniwek.

Rose made a comment on "Twitter" saying it's about time the University of Illinois reinstated Chief Illiniwek after the University of North Dakota decided to reinstate its "Fighting Sioux" nickname.

"All it was, was sort of an off the cuff comment. The U. of I. gets bogged down in silly stuff.  They're laying off guys at the shop left and right down here, but the president is running around with millions of dollars of payroll in his office and he's not spending $250,000 on a search firm for a chancellor," Rose said.

Noel: Obama budget ‘pretty left leaning’

Illinois State University Associate Professor of Management Terry Noel joined WJBC's Jim Fitzpatrick to discuss President Obama's recent budget proposal.

"I can't figure out his political strategy. I cannot imagine why he would put forth a document that goes against everything most people recommend to bring an economy out of the doldrums," Noel said. The overall budget plan includes spending hikes in education, manufacturing and infrastructure renovation, including highways and bridges.

Linsanity entered its second week Monday, with the Knicks on a roll they feel can keep right on going behind their surprising  point guard.  Lin was chosen as Eastern Conference player of the week after averaging 27.3 points and 8.3 assists in his first four starts.

Lang: Quinn at the table on gambling talks

Assistant Illinois House Majority Leader Lou Lang, a Skokie Democrat, joined WJBC's R.C. McBride and Jim Fitzpatrick to discuss gambling expansion in Illinois.

"The one thing that's changed now is that the governor has now sent an emissary to our meetings and our negotiations. I think there is a willingness on the part of the governor to engage in this conversation but you have alot of different moving parts to hear," Lang said.

Author: Not all Illinois politicians are crooked

Ed Wojcicki, an administrator at the University of Illinois at Springfield, joined WJBC's Jim Fitzpatrick to discuss his book "Nobody Calls Just to Say Hello."

Wojcicki co-authored the book with Phil Rock, who was president of the Illinois Senate from 1979 to 1993.

"I do point the finger at Blagojevich.  If he was just stupid or incompetent or even criminal I can almost deal with that. He did great damage to the State of Illinois and we're living with the repercussions of that today," Wojcicki said.
