BLOOMINGTON – Lovers of summer farmers’ markets are now able to enjoy a winter version in Downtown Bloomington.

Market organizers talked about a winter market during the 2011 market season, gauging interest from farmers to see if it would be feasible for them to have products for a winter market.

They also had to find a venue to host the indoor market, said Marisa Brooks, events outreach and marketing coordinator with the Downtown Bloomington Association.

The McLean County Museum of History stepped up, not only providing space for the winter market, but also offering free admission to the museum when the market is open.

“Admission to the market is always free, and we are thankful and grateful to the museum for making admissions to their venue free, as well.  And it gives them a chance to have more exposure and show off their exhibits and what they’re doing,” said Brooks.

The winter market is every third Saturday at the McLean County Museum of History from 10 a.m. to noon during the months of December to April.

The February market will offer things to bake with, including hard and soft wheat flour, corn meal, herbs, parsley, cilantro, meats and eggs.  There will also be vegetables like salad mix, carrots, kale, and spinach.  Brooks said regular vendors have hoop houses where they can grow their products all year long.

“They’re kind of a version of a greenhouse, but different in that there is no climate control other than the plastic and metal that kind of block out the elements,” explained Brooks.

So far, the market has been a success and Brooks said it continues to grow.

“We’ve had nothing but positive feedback.  I think the community was really excited at the prospect of having a winter market, and when we came through and brought it I think we’ve seen that every month because every month we’ve had an increase in numbers,” said Brooks.

The next winter market is Saturday at the McLean County Museum of History from 10 a.m. to noon.
