Arizona State too much for Redbirds

NORMAL-  The Illinois State women’s basketball team fell to Arizona State, 89-44, Tuesday night at Redbird Arena.

Octavia Crump led the Redbirds with 10 points and three rebounds. Katy Winge added seven points and six boards for the ‘Birds.

The Redbirds shot 15-for-44 (34 percent) from the field in the game. ASU went 36-for-71 (51 percent) from the field. The Sun Devils also outshot the Redbirds from the free throw line, going 16-for-24, compared to ISU’s 12-for-20 showing.

Illinois State (0-8) turned the ball over 18 times, resulting in 21 Sun Devil points. Arizona State (8-1) outrebounded ISU, 45-30, which resulted in 18 second-chance points. The Sun Devils dominated down low, finishing with a 46-14 advantage in points in the paint.

Crump gave the Redbirds an early boost by scoring back-to-back buckets after the tip to give ISU a 4-2 lead. The Sun Devils responded with a 10-0 run, during a six-minute scoring drought for ISU, to take a 12-4 lead over the Redbirds.

The Redbirds’ lone scorer midway through the first half was Crump with eight points. The second Redbird to net a basket was Stekara Hall, who hit a jumper at the 10:43 mark of the first half. Hall made two more baskets at the end of the half to finish with six points. Crump led ISU with 10 points at the break.

ASU extended its first-half lead with points in the paint and points from the free throw line. The Sun Devils made it to the charity stripe 17 times in the half, and converted on 11 of those tries. ASU also outscored ISU, 16-8, in the paint. ASU ended the half on a 16-9 run and went into the locker room with a 41-24 lead over the Redbirds.

ISU was unable to recover from the 17-point halftime deficit. The Sun Devils went on a 14-2 run out of the break to extend their lead to 55-26. The Sun Devils sealed the win with a late 17-0 run.

ASU had 10 players score in the game. The Sun Devils were led by Quinn Dornstauder with 19 points and five rebounds. Promise Amukamara chipped in 14 points and the Freeport, Illinois native, Sophie Brunner, scored 12 points. The Sun Devils outscored ISU’s bench, 43-9.

The Redbirds will look for their first win of the season this Friday, when Bowling Green visits Redbird Arena. Tip-off for that game is set for 7 p.m.
