Proposal to change Illinois high school football fails

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois High School Association members have rejected a proposal that would have changed football matchups in the state.
 
WREX-TV in Rockford reports Tuesday that the IHSA says Proposal 10 failed 395-212. The proposal would have replaced current football conferences with eight geographic regions. The top four teams from each region would have gone to the playoffs.
 
Opponents of the idea said it would eliminate rivalry games and restrict schools from scheduling their own game.
 
Sycamore High School Principal Tim Carlson had proposed the measure. He said it would create a system in Illinois that's similar to those in Iowa and Missouri. The two states made changes to address the instability created by high schools changing conference memberships.
