NORMAL – A Normal Town Councilman has asked the city manager to look at ways the town can create safer ways for pedestrians to cross busy streets.

"I've seen in other college communities where there are lighted crosswalks, there's more signage," said Councilman Chuck Scott. "There's different ways to demarcate where the crosswalk is to make it a safe walk."

Scott said this is an especially important issue after the death of Illinois State University student Benjamin Allison. Allison was hit by a driver while crossing the intersection of College and Fell avenues.

"It's not an inexpensive venture to do something like this," said Scott. "I've seen small lights mounted actually in the street surface. I don't know what that means for snow removal and all sorts of things like that, but I know that these kinds of devices are available."

Scott added right now the town is only in an exploratory stage and has not yet reached any kinds of conclusions.
