Saints win easily on road vs Olympia

By Nick McClintock

STANFORD- The Central Catholic Saints cruised to a 65-44 victory Tuesday night with a dominant effort over Cornbelt Conference opponent Olympia.

The first quarter saw multiple wide open looks for the Saints, and the shots fell for several of the Central Catholic players, inclusing Jon Rave and Jake Baughman, leading to a early double digit lead 19-8. Olympia tried to hold on with a few second quarter three's of there own, hitting two triples in the first few minutes, but the Saints were simply too much in the first half offensively, heading to halftime with a 38-22 advantage.

The second half was not entirely different from the first. Turnovers from the Spartans throughout the quarter saw the Saint lead jump to 20, before eventually toning down for the last few minutes. The lone bright spot for the Olympia Spartans was junior Blake Dehn, who scored 8 of the Spartans 11 points in the third quarter. When the dust settled, Central Catholic held a 54-33 lead going into the final quarter.

The final quarter saw more offense for the Spartans, as they would drop the Spartan lead all the way down to 14, but Head Coach for the Saints Jason Welch emptied his bench for the final six minutes. Leading the way for the Saints was Jake Reinhart with 17. Olympia was led by Dehn with 16.

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
