The St. Louis Cardinals and Phillies play the second of their four-game series tonight at Busch Stadium. Michael Wacha takes his 3-and-0 record to the mound for St. Louis, while rookie Severino Gonzalez will make his major league debut for Philadelphia.

WJBC 1230 AM will have the play-by-play at 7:05 p.m. Tim Lewis will host Sportstalk before the game at 6 p.m. Listen live here on WJBC.com.

The Illinois State baseball team will travel to West Lafayette, Indiana, for a mid-week, non-conference game at Purdue Tuesday. First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m. at Alexander Field.

Illinois State (21-20) enters Tuesday’s game after winning its first game over a ranked opponent in over eight years following Saturday’s 4-1 victory over No. 15 Missouri State at Duffy Bass Field. Illinois State posted a 3-2 record over a five-game homestand last week, thanks to mid-week victories over Illinois Wesleyan and Webster.

“Purdue is a lot like us this year in that they have played a lot of good teams – several highly ranked teams – but have come up a run or two short,” said Illinois State head coach Bo Durkac. “The Boilermakers and the Redbirds have had some really exciting games over the past few years, and I expect Tuesday’s game to be another good one.”

The Redbirds will turn to left-handed junior Craig Larkin to start Tuesday’s game. Larkin owns a 1-0 record and an 18.00 ERA in six relief appearances. He is coming off one of his best appearances of the season, striking out the side in an inning of work against Webster on April 22.

Purdue (13-31) will counter with junior right-hander Shane Bryant, who is 2-3 with a 4.93 ERA in 13 appearances this season, including six starts.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
