The St. Louis Cardinals will close out one of their most successful homestands in years when they play the Chicago Cubs in the finale of a four-game series at Busch Stadium on Thursday.

The Cardinals have gone 8-2 on the 11-game homestand to this point.

John Lackey is scheduled to pitch for the Cardinals against Jake Arrieta of the Cubs. WJBC will have the game at 12:35 p.m. with Mike Shannon and John Rooney behind the mic.

Tim Lewis and Jim Ahart will host a two-hour edition of Sportstalk starting at 6 on WJBC and WJBC.com.

The Illinois State softball team will be facing a familiar foe Thursday when the Redbirds battle Bradley in the first round of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament in Wichita, Kansas. The two teams enter with almost identical records and have played three games head-to-head in the last three weeks.

ISU comes in at 14-12 in the MVC, 23-30 overall. The Braves ended the season strong to grab the number 6 seed with a 15-12 mark, 22-31 overall.

Due to the possibility of inclement weather, the game has been moved up to 12:04 p.m.

If ISU wins, the Redbirds would play at 6:30 against Northern Iowa in the second round.

If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
