WJBC Forum: Mother’s Day

By Arlene Hosea

As we approach Mother’s Day, I am reflecting on the women in my life. Those who taught me much and went through many trials and tribulations to create a pathway for me and others that was smoother than the one they walked during their time on this earth. Those women were Hattie, Cartheda, Loretta, and Joanne, my grandmothers and my sisters who left us too soon physically but continue to give spiritually.

However, there is still one, the one that gave me life and to this day continues to lift me up when I am down, cradle my head on her lap when I need a good cry and look me straight in my eyes when I am wrong and tells me so.   The one is my mother Josephine Mazique Hosea. Crystal Adame pays tribute to The One in her life and this poem seems fitting for my mother and the other mothers in my life.

The One

By Crystal Adame

The one who brought me down to earth,
and held me every day.
The one who gracefully gave me birth,
and said, I love you in every way.

The one who taught me everything,
like how to crawl and walk.
The one who taught me how to sing,
after learning how to talk.

The one who told me, stay in school,
and always play nice.
The one who told me, keep it cool,
and gave me good advice.

The one who taught me how to read,
and how to do my math.
The one who taught me how to bead,
and told me to take a bath.

The one who lectured, “School before men”
and to love one another.
Believe me that this woman,
can be no one but my Mother!
Thank you momma Jo and I love you!

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
