BLOOMINGTON – The Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts has set the stage for what it hopes will be an exciting year.

The BCPA’s new season includes 27 concerts and festivals. Director Tina Salamone told WJBC’s Susan Saunders, more acts are expected.

“We have offers out in country, in comedy and in pop rock that we hope to announce in the next four to six weeks,” Salamone said.

Those already scheduled to perform include David Cassidy; Hal Holbrook as Mark Twain; ‘All My Children’ alum Walt Willey as ‘Wild Bill’ Hickock; a Frank Sinatra tribute on his 100th birthday and the Vanderbilt Melodores, the former NBC ‘Sing-Off’ champions who are led by Normal Community alum William Woodard.

BCPA will host a new beer festival in late August, similar to Bruegala which moves to the Corn Crib in Normal this summer. Another outdoor show is planned in October – the Northern Exposure Music Fest, which will feature eclectic music.

Tickets go on sale for all shows on June 4, but the BCPA’s ‘Arts Partners’ can buy tickets today.

Salamone said the BCPA has a new, lighter brochure that can be more widely distributed at the same cost.

“The piece we had been sending out traditionally is kind of heavy and costs a lot to print and (mail), so we only sent out about 13,000 last year and we had so many asking where they can get their own copies,” Salamone said, adding this year’s lighter program has gone out to about 28,000 prospective customers.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
