BLOOMINGTON – Illinois State basketball All-American Doug Collins is coming back to speak in his college home.

The former NBA player and coach will speak at the YMCA’s Legacy dinner July 9 at Bloomington Country Club.  B.J. Wilken of the YMCA said the organization is thrilled to have him.

“Through one of our donors of the YMCA, we were able to connect that way and Doug agreed to do this,” said Wilkin. “We were so grateful and so humble by this gesture that he extended. With his connections to Bloomington-Normal and particularly his connections to this YMCA – Doug participated in this ‘Y’ when he was in college, we were pretty excited.”

Collins, a former Olympian, is currently a basketball analyst for ESPN.  Proceeds from the dinner will benefit the Strong Kids campaign.

Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
