NORMAL – Illinois State’s Will Headean has been selected in 13th round of the Major League Baseball Draft by the San Diego Padres.

Headen was drafted one day after the Redbirds’ Paul DeJung was chosen in the fourth round by the St. Louis Cardinals.

“I want to congratulate Paul and Will for being drafted and for their contributions to Illinois State – both the baseball program and the University,” said Illinois State head coach Bo Durkac. “They represented the institution in a positive manner, and I wish them luck as they begin their professional careers.”

Headean, the 387th overall pick, was the second left-handed pitcher taken by the Padres in the draft. In three seasons as a Redbird, he owns a career record of 10-13 and a career 4.40 ERA. He has appeared in 48 games, with 28 starts. He has walked 101 and struck out 192 over 196.1 innings of work, while limiting opponents to a .243 batting average.

In 2015, Headean was 5-5 with a 3.99 ERA. He pitched in 17 games, with 15 starts, covering 94.2 innings. He struck out 86 batters and held opposing hitters to a .236 average.

DeJong and Headean led the Redbirds to a 27-27 record in 2015.

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
