NORMAL – Major League Baseball’s all-time hits leader was the guest manager Thursday night for the Normal CornBelters.

Speaking to media ahead of the night’s double header, Rose said it’s always fun to participate in this type of game.

“I appreciate the enthusiasm that the players give the fans in this league,” said Rose. “They’re trying to keep their dreams alive (and) maybe, perhaps, play in the big leagues.”

Rose added it takes a “stud” to play independent league baseball.

“You’re not going to get rich playing here. Like I try to tell these guys, every time you play a game there’s somebody watching,” said Rose. “If you’re playing on Monday you gotta give that somebody a reason to come back and watch you on Tuesday.”

Rose will be involved in this year’s MLB All-Star game in Cincinnati. He said most, if not all, the players in that game “play the game right.”

“You’re not a loafy come Sunday and make that game,” said Rose. “I’m really interested in seeing (Andrew) McCutchen. He’s my favorite player now. I really think he’s the best player in the National League.”

Rose said he’s “elated” new MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred is going to review his status in baseball.

“I hope in the new future to sit down with the commissioner and talk to him about me and my life in baseball. Until that conversation happens it’s better off not to talk about it” he said.

Rose explained he does not worry about whether he will end up in the Hall of Fame because he’s “not in control of that.”

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
