NORMAL – A Friday morning fire in an apartment at 710 Orlando Ave. was accidental and caused by unattended cooking.

Fire crews were called to the scene just after 1 a.m.  The Normal Fire Department said heat from an electric stove burner transferred to a pot filled with grease and food items and lead to the ignition of materials on and near the stove.

The tenant had began cooking at about 9:30 p.m. on Thursday night, but fell asleep in the back bedroom. One person was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The fire department said to never leave cooking unattended and if you have to leave the kitchen, take pans off the heat.

Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
