WJBC Forum: Do the right thing

By David Stanczak

I don’t often espouse causes in my Forums, but…

What if, one morning, you found a letter on your doorstep threatening to kill you if you and your family didn’t move, really move, far away, forever? Christians living in the Middle East, especially Syria, Iraq, and other areas under ISIS control are receiving such letters every day. They are systematically singled out, persecuted, kidnapped, raped, forbidden to work, and murdered, by beheading, torture, or crucifixion; the women in their families, as young as 9, are forced into prostitution. They leave, by the thousands, becoming homeless in a way we cannot understand.

In Sunday’s paper, Charles Krauthammer predicted a religious “cleansing” of the Middle East, where Christians have pre-existed Muslims for 600 years.

The U.S. government won’t help these refugees specifically, because programs to rescue Christians aren’t likewise focused on “Yazidis, Druze, or Shiites.

You don’t have to be Christian to want to help. Lord George Weidenfeld of the UK has organized a Safe Haven Fund to support those he can (about 150) for up to 18 months. Weidenfeld, a Jew, was rescued as a teenager from Vienna in 1938 by Christians, and is returning the favor. But there are thousands of refugees.

I have donated to the Adopt a Refugee Family program. Operated by volunteers, 100% of contributions goes to the intended recipients in Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, and Turkey for food, water, clothing, and temporary shelter. The program is established as a 501(c) organization.

You can find Adopt a Refugee Family on the web, or call them at 248-406-2052 for more information.Living comfortably in central Illinois, it is easy for us not to understand that martyrdom of Christians did not end with the Romans; it is happening now. Executions are only part of it. These people, whose only “crime” is being Christian, are forced to make impossible choices, if they are even allowed to live long enough to make them. Help them. Please.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
