NORMAL – The Normal CornBelters made a pair of first-inning runs hold up in a pitcher’s duel with the Florence Freedom in a 2-0 win on Tuesday night at the Corn Crib.
The lone runs were scored when Aaron Dudley hit a single into center field bringing in both Mark Micowski and Santiago Chirino to give the Belters a 2-0 lead.
In the eighth inning Belters starter Chris Carmain (5-2) came off the mound as Cole Brocker took his place. Carmain’s final line included seven innings, six hits, three walks and a season-high nine strikeouts.
Freedom starter Chuck Weaver (5-4) also ended his night in the eighth inning. Weaver pitched seven innings while allowing seven hits and striking out six without a walk.
The Belters (42-31) take over sole possession of first place in the Frontier League West Division and take on the Freedom (34-39) in Game 2 of the series on Wednesday night at 6:35 at the Corn Crib. Rob Blanc (1-0, 3.14 ERA) takes the ball for the Belters while the Freedom counter with Jeremy Gooding (5-3, 2.02) in a match-up of right-handers.
