AVON, Oh. – The Normal CornBelters recorded a new single-season record for wins with a 6-0 victory over the Lake Erie Crushers on Thursday night at All Pro Freight Stadium.
The CornBelters started the scoring in the second inning when Ozney Guillen slugged a two-run homer over the right field wall. Aaron Dudley increased the lead to 3-0 an inning later with a towering solo home run out of the stadium’s premises in right field.
Guillen contributed an RBI double in the fourth inning and Pat McKenna homered to right in the fifth to extend the Belters’ lead to 5-0. Santiago Chirino hit his second home run of the season in the ninth inning for the final insurance tally.
Kevin Johnson (7-4) worked seven innings for the win, giving up three hits and two walks while striking out seven. Brad Zambron (3-6) worked six and one-third innings for the loss.
The CornBelters (49-32) set the team record for wins in a season and lead the Frontier League West Division. The Crushers fall to 34-46, sixth in the East.
The Belters return for a three-game home stand against the Frontier Greys on Friday and Saturday evenings at 6:35 and Sunday afternoon at 3:05. The Belters plan to start righthander Mike Schweiss (6-7, 3.39 ERA) on the mound on Friday. The broadcast on WJBC.com begins at 6:20 p.m.
