U High extends winning streak, Unit 5 schools triumph

University High School’s football team extended its regular season winning streak to 29 with a 38-16 victory at Urbana, while Normal Community and Normal West had successful trips to Belleville.

NCHS defeated East, 63-31, while Normal West topped Belleville West, 34-30. Central Catholic dropped a  10-7 decision to Washington at home, while BHS was beaten at home by Nazareth Park of LaGrange Park, 34-6.

BHS’ lone touchdown came from Ian Sweeney, who returned a fumble 35 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter after the Purple Raiders trailed 34-0.

Central Catholic controlled the first half, but in the end had too many turnovers to win. The Saints had two fumbles inside the 5-yard line in the first half. Central Catholic’s touchdown came from Brett Segobiano on a 3-yard run in the second quarter,

Normal West quarterback Mitch Fairfield completed 23 of 34 passes for 333 yards to lead the Wildcats to victory. Jack Coakley had seven receptions for 83 yards. There were seven lead changes in the game.
