NORMAL – The Normal CornBelters say former White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen will manage the team on Wednesday when Brooks Carey serves a one-game suspension.
The CornBelters begin a three-game series with Evansville at the Corn Crib on Tuesday with their magic number to clinch the Frontier League West division title down to two as they lead the River City Rascals by five games with six games remaining.
CornBelters president Steve Malliet tells WJBC Carey asked Guillen to stand in for him.
“It is a great honor to have a true champion and a good friend of mine to manage our ball club,” said Carey. “He is a true baseball guy and with the CornBelters in a pennant race, there is no doubt the Ozzie will do a fantastic job.”
Ozzie’s son Ozney is the starting rightfielder in his second season with the CornBelters.
“I’m glad that I can help Brooks and this great group of guys that I get along with so well,” said Guillen. “The only bad part is that I can’t use the number 13 because I can’t persuade the guy.”
Ozney wears number 13 and has not been coached by his dad since he was in high school.
Ozzie Guillen managed the White Sox from 2004 to 2011, leading them to a World Series title in 2005. He’s been out of baseball since managing the Miami Marlins in 2012.
