MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – For the second-straight game, the Illinois State soccer team went into double overtime and Sunday it was Lauren Koehl who played the role of hero. Her 105th minute goal gave ISU a 1-0 win over Central Michigan in Mount Pleasant, Michigan.

After 39 combined shots that missed the back of the net, Koehl chased down a pass from Brianne Richards at the top of the goal box. CMU keeper, Maddy Bunnell, came racing out and tried to beat Koehl to the ball, but as she slid Koehl flicked the ball over her head and the ball fit just inside the right post for the winner.

The shot was the only one Koehl would take in the game, and the game-winner is her second of the season.

The two teams were never hurting for offensive opportunities as ISU led Central Michigan, 9-8, in shots at the half. Both teams took seven shots in the second half and three in the first overtime, but ISU controlled the second overtime, taking all three shots.

The Redbirds finished with 22 shots, which is one shy of their season-high. Ali Farkos led the Redbirds with six shots while Kelli Zickert took five.

The Redbirds held a 22-18 advantage in shots while the Chippewas held a slight, 5-4, advantage in corner kicks.

In the net, Vanessa Niestrom secured her first shutout of the season and tallied a season-high seven saves. The shutout is the second of the season for ISU.

The win pushes the Redbirds to 3-5-1 on the season with Missouri Valley Conference play beginning Saturday against Drake.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
