NORMAL – Ali Farkos and Lauren Koehl each scored a goal as the Illinois State soccer team held off a late rally from Loyola to pick up a, 2-1, win in Missouri Valley Conference play Wednesday night at Adelaide Street Field.

Despite an early trio of corner kicks from Loyola, Illinois State controlled the game for much of the first 45 minutes. In the 31st minute, ISU found a break through as Farkos lined up to take a cross from the right sideline. Instead, the ball sailed high over Loyola keeper Maddie Ford’s head and into the net for a, 1-0, Redbird lead.

The goal was Farkos’ first of the season and the Redbirds went to the half leading by one.

Loyola’s offense came to life at the beginning of the second half as the Ramblers generated more offensive chances, but the ISU defense answered the call each time.

In the 74th minute the Redbirds added to their lead as Lauren Koehl received a pass from Emily Dickman inside the goal box. Koehl rifled a shot across the face of the goal and in for her fourth of the season. It was also her third-straight match with a goal.

Down 2-0, Loyola increased the offensive pressure, and in the 85th minute cut the lead in half. Ashley Bovee found herself open in the middle of the goal box and headed in a cross from Katie Grall to make it 2-1.

However, ISU controlled the final five minutes and pushed its record to 4-6-2 overall and 1-1-0 in the MVC. ISU outshot Loyola 16-9, while Loyola held a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks.

Koehl led the Redbirds with seven shots while Vanessa Niestrom made one save in the net.

ISU is back at home Friday against Oklahoma. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. at Adelaide Street Field.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
