NORMAL – The Illinois State soccer team fell to Oklahoma, 1-0, Friday afternoon at Adelaide Street Field.

It was ISU’s final non-conference match of the season, and Oklahoma entered one spot outside the national Top 25 rankings. The two teams played to a scoreless draw in the first half as four total shots were taken. The Sooners managed to take three with one on goal, while the Redbirds fired one.

At the start of the second half, ISU opened with a flurry of offensive chances but was unable to find the back of the net. In the 64th minute, Oklahoma broke through. Angela Boyle took a free kick from 40 yards out and Kaylee Dao headed it in to give OU the lead.

The lead would hold for the final 25 minutes as Oklahoma turned away all six of ISU’s shots. Six different players recorded a shot for the Redbirds while OU finished with 11.

In the net, Vanessa Niestrom recorded three saves in 90 minutes. Her counterpart, Kassidie Stade, recorded one.

Illinois State held a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks while Oklahoma held a 4-1 edge in shots on goal.

The loss drops ISU to 4-8-2 on the year with four matches remaining. The Redbirds will be in Missouri Valley Conference competition for the remainder of the season.

ISU is back in action at 7 p.m. Oct. 10 at Northern Iowa.

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
