Missouri State 2nd-half goal downs Redbird soccer

By WJBC Staff

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Missouri State scored an early second half goal and that would be all it would need to halt Illinois State soccer’s two-game Missouri Valley Conference winning streak Saturday in Springfield, Missouri as the Bears won 1-0.

Both teams struggled to find an offensive rhythm in the first half, as they played a scoreless 45 minutes. The Redbirds managed three shots in the half compared to Missouri State’s zero. In the final minute of the half ISU had two corner kick opportunities and a shot attempt, but came up empty.

In the second half, it took all of two minutes for Missouri State to find the back of the net as Brooke Zimmerman received a pass from Cassie Le at the top of the box and rifled in her second goal of the season.

Illinois State responded by dominating possession for much of the second half, but the Redbirds could not get anything past MSU keeper, Jessica Perry. Perry made four saves in the net, including three in the second half.

Statistically, ISU dominated the match, owning an 11-4 advantage in shots and an 8-1 edge in corner kicks. Twice Perry had to reach up high and bat a ball out of bounds to make a save and twice she had to dive to the ground to make a save.

Hannah Rodgers and Lauren Koehl led the way for ISU with three shots and two shots on goal apiece. Vanessa Niestrom did not make a save in the net as Missouri State’s only shot on goal found the back of the net.

The loss drops the Redbirds to 5-8-2 overall and 2-2 in the MVC.

ISU returns home next Sunday to face Evansville. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Adelaide Street Field and the team will celebrate Senior Day and Heidecke Day.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
