NORMAL – The Illinois State offense needed to find a deep threat in the passing game in 2015 and junior Anthony Warrum has seized his opportunity in recent weeks.

His performance against No. 20 Western Illinois was exceptional once again, and for his efforts he was named the Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive Player of the Week by the league office Sunday.

The honor is the first for Warrum this season and the third weekly honor for a Redbird player this season. Marshaun Coprich was previously named the MVFC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance on Sept. 19 in an overtime win at Eastern Illinois and Brannon Barry was named MVFC Newcomer of the Week after a standout defensive effort in a win over UNI on Oct. 3.

Warrum accounted for three touchdowns in the 48-28 win over the Leathernecks and averaged 42.5 yards per catch against the Leathernecks, as the Redbirds improved to 4-0 in MVFC play and took sole possession of the top spot in the conference. He caught four passes for 170 yards and found the end zone twice, while also recovering a fumble in the end zone for another score.

The Fishers, Indiana, native caught a 41-yard pass from Tre Roberson in the second quarter to give the Redbirds a seven-point lead at the time. He then connected with Roberson in the third quarter for a 65-yard touchdown that tied the ballgame, after Western took a 28-21 lead. His final score of the day was the result of some luck, as he was in the right place in the right time as a Coprich fumble bounced in the end zone right into his arms.

Warrum now has 10 touchdown receptions, five of which have been caught in the last two weeks, and has amassed 364 receiving yards in his last two contests. He currently ranks No. 2 in the FCS in receiving touchdowns, No. 4 in yards per reception (24.77) and No. 5 in receiving yards (743).

The Redbirds (6-1, 4-0 MVFC) host Indiana State (4-3, 2-2 MFC) at Hancock Stadium on Saturday, with kickoff set for noon on Halloween. The game will be broadcast live on CSN Chicago and streamed live on ESPN3.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
