John R. Hirsch, 93, of Bloomington, died at 10:28 a.m. on Wednesday, October 28, 2015 at his home, surrounded by his children.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 31, 2015 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 527 W. Jackson St., Bloomington, with Rev. Ric Schneider officiating.  Interment will be at St. Joseph Cemetery, Bloomington.   Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday at Carmody-Flynn Funeral Home, 1800 Eastland Drive, Bloomington, where the rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m.   In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Joseph School of Nursing Alumni Association or St. Mary’s Catholic Church, both in Bloomington.

He was born January 23, 1922 in Bloomington, son of Joseph Frank and Anna Josephine Majer Hirsch.   He married Marcella M. Sullivan on May 4, 1946, she preceded him in death on March 23, 1993.  He was also preceded in death by his parents; two brothers and three sisters.

Surviving are his son, John R. Hirsch, Jr of Palatine; two daughters, Mary Kay Nicolai of Ontario, CA and Peggy (Tim) McCubbins of Bloomington; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and one sister, Cecilia “Tillie” Hirsch of Normal.

John worked for the City of Bloomington in the Water Department for 35 years, retiring from the superintendant position on December 31, 1981.

He enjoyed golfing and was a member of the McLean County Senior Golf Association.  He was also a member of and very active at the American Hungarian Family Society, a member of the Moose Lodge and the Elks Club, all of Bloomington.
