High school football playoffs open Friday night

The road to DeKalb and Illinois high school football championships begins with post-season play on Friday and Saturday.

U-High carries a 6-3 record and a #14 seed to Peoria Stadium on Friday for a 7 p.m. kick-off against Peoria High (8-1) in Class 5A. The host Lions are a #3 seed and the coach of the visiting Pioneers, Mike Troll, says everyone’s tough in the playoffs.

“That’s the way we’re going to look at it,” said Troll. “They’re going to give us some things that we can do with our offense as far as what they do defensively, and vice versa.”

The U-High-Peoria match-up is the featured game on Friday’s WJBC Country Financial High School Football Extravaganza, which also will cover Normal Community (8-1) with a #6 seed hosting #27 Schaumburg (6-3) in Class 7A in a 7 p.m. Friday start. Ironmen coach Wes Temples says despite being favored, his team needs to execute well to win.

“Any sort of breakdown gets you beat,” said Temples, “so Number 1, we have to take care of the football. We have to be able to move the ball and we have to make the most of our opportunities. There are some things we like (about Schaumburg) and some things that really worry us.”

Friday also features a 7 p.m. kick-off in Mackinaw in a Class 2A first round game as Deer Creek-Mackinaw (7-2) carries a #4 seed against visiting #13 West Hancock (6-3). Dee-Mack coach Job Linboom is ready to establish the ground game. “If we can establish the run game and mix in a little play action and keep the penalties down, we’ll be all right,” said Linboom.

In Class 4A, #8 Pontiac (7-2) hosts #9 Johnsburg (7-2) at Williamson Field. The game can be heard on WJEZ 98.9 in Livingston County and world-wide on WJEZ.com.

First round coverage continues with bonus play-by-play on WJBC.com on Saturday as Central Catholic hosts DuQuoin at 2 p.m. in Class 3A, Play-by-play of a Class 6A rematch between Normal West and Peoria Notre Dame can also be heard on WJBC.com with kick-off scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
