Normal Community High School’s football team captured a 34-28 victory over Schaumburg in the first round of the Class 7A playoffs.

Meanwhile, Deer Creek-Mackinaw advanced while U-High was eliminated.

NCHS wins

The Ironmen got off to a hot start, collecting the first 13 points of the game. Schaumburg would answer, though, trailing just 13-6 at the half.

Schaumburg came out of the locker room strong and led 22-19 early in the fourth quarter.

The Ironnmen rode the back of sophomore running back Varshaun Dixon as he collected a 41-yard run setting himself up for a 2-yard touchdown run to make the score 26-22 in favor of NCHS.

Schaumburg did not quit as it answered on fourth down when quarterback Justin Perez connected with Bernard Payne to give them a 28-26 lead with 4:46 to play.

Dixon, who replaced NCHS’ standout running back Alec Bozarth in the fourth quarter, answered with a 26-yard touchdown run to give the Ironmen the lead for good. NCHS completed a pass from Grant Price to Christian Wey to secure the 34-28 win for the Ironmen.

Bozarth was suffering from leg cramps and did not return to the game.

Dixon finished with 80 yards on nine carries and collected two scores. Bozarth had 54 yards and a score. Grant Price finished with 48 yards and a touchdown on the ground while throwing for 166 yards.

The Ironmen overcame three turnovers and improve to 9-1. They will host Maine South next week, time to be determined.

U-High loses

Peoria standout running back Kenten Watkins rushed 29 times for 295 yards and six touchdowns.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
