WJBC Forum: Climate change

By Jim Fisher

I was just thinking about how cool this past summer has been. The Temperatures seemed much lower for most of the summer that I didn’t even get a chance to take my boat out. I have become very sensitive to the weather since my hair turned gray. Now don’t get me wrong here, I am not saying the Global Warming has caused my hair to turn gray.  Did I say “Global warming”? I meant to say “Climate Change”. You know, the events that cause the temperature to go down which causes the Polar Ice Caps to melt and the sea levels to rise in Ft Lauderdale, as the President has said.  You know. The CO2 gases that are causing the Greenhouse Effect on the planet. The CO2 that cause plants to grow tremendously. You know, the reason we shouldn’t be eating red meat. Because according to the President,  flatulence caused by herds of cows contribute to the CO2 levels. Which causes the grass to grow which cows love to eat, causing more… You know, Climate Change, The Climate Change that prevented me from going out on my boat this summer. According to this administration’s department of energy, Jack O Lanterns also have an effect on Climate  Change. I didn’t realize that Jack O Lanterns expelled the same gas that cows did.

A new study has shown that higher concentrations of CO2 are not only heating the planet they are making people dumber.  This new study from Harvard caused  former Vice President Al Gore to tweet recently: “the negative impact CO2 has on human cognition & decision making”.  All this culminates at a time when our President in a speech he gave at the United Nations Climate Change Summit. Stated that more dramatic than terrorism, is the “growing threat of a Changing Climate.”

Oh, I get it . You weren’t tweeting about what. You were tweeting about Who.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
