ST. LOUIS – Seven members of the Illinois State soccer team have been named to the Missouri Valley Conference All-Conference teams, the league announced Thursday evening at the league’s awards banquet in Evansville, Indiana.

Lauren Koehl and Abby Van Deventer were named to the All-MVC First Team. Koehl enjoyed a breakout season as the central figure in the ISU offensive attack. The redshirt junior netted a team-high eight goals, including five against Valley competition. Koehl finished the season with 18 points and also dished out two assists.

Van Deventer was once again the anchor of the ISU defense that compiled a 1.72 goals against average and three shutouts on the season. Van Deventer was named the MVC Defensive Player of the Week three times and finished her career with nine player of the week awards. She will graduate tied for fifth on program’s all-time games played list with 78. This is her second All-MVC First-Team honor.

Ali Farkos and Paige Jarsombeck were named to the All-MVC Second Team. Farkos recorded nine points, which was the second highest on the team. She ranked first on the team and second in the MVC with five assists. Farkos was also named the MVC Offensive Player of the Week Monday for her performance at Indiana State Oct. 29. With 1:30 remaining, Farkos scored the game-winning goal and also recorded an assist earlier in the match.

Jarsombeck was a steady presence at the right back position. After splitting time between forward and defensive back last season, Jarsombeck played 1,259 minutes and played 90-plus minutes in the final four games of the season on the back line.

Brooke Ksiazek earned All-MVC Honorable Mention status. Ksiazek played in 17 matches this season and racked up 1,366 minutes as a defensive midfielder. She also netted a goal this season, which was the third of her career.

The Redbirds also landed two freshmen, Riley Ebenroth and Megan Kozlow, on the MVC All-Freshman Team. Ebenroth and Kozlow started 17 and 16 matches, respectively on the left side of the defense, and each played over 1,000 minutes. Ebenroth netted her first collegiate goal in the Oct. 29 win over Indiana State.

The Redbirds finished the season with a 6-10-2 overall record and 3-3 record in the MVC.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
