The second round of the Illinois high school football playoffs features seven local teams and two broadcasts on WJBC.com on Saturday.

Play-by-play of Central Catholic at Paxton-Buckley-Loda and Maine South at Normal Community can be found here. Pre-game is at 12:45 with kickoff at 1:00 for both contests.

Central Catholic travels to PBL in Class 3A in a match-up of teams with 9-1 records. The visiting Saints controlled DuQuoin 27-0 while PBL eliminated Williamsville 28-23 in opening round play.

“They’re a spread-shotgun team but they still run the ball 70 percent of the time,” Saints coach Mike Moews said about host PBL. “They’ve got a nice running back with nice wheels and good size. Their quarterback’s a little undersized and doesn’t throw great, but he’s got really quick feet and runs really well, so they try to get the ball out.”

The Central Catholic-PBL winner faces either Carlinville or St. Joseph-Ogden in the quarterfinals.

Normal Community (9-1) remains at home for the second straight week as they face Maine South (8-2). The Ironmen held off Schaumburg 34-28 last week as Maine South tripped Plainfield North 35-20.

Ironmen coach Wes Temples wants his team to control the ball. “The last three games we’ve turned the ball over seven times, and you can’t do that and win games,” said Temples. “We’ve been fortunate to win games doing it, but at this time of year and especially playing a program like Maine South you can’t turn the ball over to give ourselves a chance. If we don’t turn the ball over I like where we’re at and the opportunity we have.”

The Ironmen-Hawks winner moves into the quarterfinals against either Lincoln-Way East or Libertyville.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
