Rauner suspends the acceptance of Syrian refugees in Illinois

SPRINGFIELD – There’s a temporary hold on Illinois accepting refugees from Syria.

In a statement Monday, Governor Bruce Rauner said Illinois must find a way to balance the state’s tradition of welcoming refugees while ensuring the safety and security of the state’s citizens.

Rauner said the news surrounding the Paris terror attacks Friday reminds the state of the “all-too-real security threats facing America.” The statement also said the state will consider all legal options pending a full review of the country’s acceptance and security procedures by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
