ST. LOUIS – For the second week in a row and the third time this season, Illinois State running back Marshaun Coprich was named the Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive Player of the Week by the league office.

Coprich earned the weekly award after a 254-yard and three touchdown day at Southern Illinois on Nov. 14, and previously earned the MVFC Offensive Player of the Week honors, following a 178-yard, two-score performance against Eastern Illinois on Sept. 19.

The heavy snow and windy conditions at Hancock Stadium Saturday did not slow down Coprich at all, as he had one of the best days of his career in the regular-season finale win over South Dakota.  The Victorville, California, native looked right at home running in the snow and rushed for 251 yards on 30 carries and tied a career-best with four rushing touchdowns, as the Redbirds shut out the Coyotes 46-0.

Coprich’s first score was a 12-yard run midway through the second quarter, and he followed that up with a 45-yard scoring run just before halftime.  He later added another 12-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter and capped off his day with a 74-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter.

The All-American led the MVFC in rushing yards (1,720), touchdowns (20), yards per game (156.4), all-purpose yards per game (169.0) and scoring (11.1) during the regular season and rushed for over 100 yards in nine of 11 games. Coprich posted three games with over 200 yards rushing, recorded seven multiple touchdown efforts and posted six games with over 150 yards rushing.

Coprich and the No. 2 seeded Redbirds will host the winner of the Dayton/Western Illinois game in the second round of the FCS Playoffs on Dec. 5.  Kickoff at Hancock Stadium is set for 1 p.m.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
