NORMAL – U.S. Rep. Darin LaHood (R-Peoria) spoke with students Wednesday morning at Normal West High School.

When asked about the transpacific partnership, which was recently passed by the Senate and is likely to be voted on by the House next year, LaHood said he supports the legislation.

“Caterpillar, 70 percent of what they make goes somewhere else around the world,” said LaHood. “But also, on the agriculture side, our corn and soybeans that are created right here in McLean County, creating more markets for those products means more jobs and opportunities in Central Illinois.”

LaHood was impressed by the students questions, which also ranged from Syrian refugees to advice on entering politics. He was also asked about the future of the Republican Party. LaHood said new House Speaker Paul Ryan is the right man for the job.

“I think he’s going to be much more proactive instead of reactive. I think that was part of the problem with John Boehner,” said LaHood. “Frankly, I’m happy that Boehner’s gone and we have a new, fresh face.”

LaHood added it’s important for representatives to meet with students because it can help them get engaged in politics and government.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
