ISU women fall to SIUE

NORMAL – The Illinois State women’s basketball fell to visiting SIUE, 65-57, in a non-conference game on Doug Collins Court at Redbird Arena Tuesday night.

Freshman Shakeela Fowler led the Redbirds with 12 points. She also recorded four assists and three steals. Octavia Crump registered 10 points and three rebounds to go along with two steals and two blocks. Viria Livingston recorded a career-high 10 rebounds, while chipping in five points.

SIUE’s Shronda Butts led all scorers with a total of 20 points.

The Cougars (3-4) started with a 13-4 lead in the first quarter. SIUE took the lead when it went on an 8-0 run, as Butts tallied 11 of her points in the first quarter. At the end of the quarter, Crump led the Redbirds with four points, as ISU trailed, 17-6.

The Redbirds (1-5) started the second quarter with a 7-0 run. Millie Stevens started the run with a jumper and a layup, followed by a 3-pointer from Katrina Beck. SIUE stopped the Redbirds’ run with a three-point play to make the score 22-13. The Redbirds answered back with a 5-3 run to make the score 25-20. Lexie Taylor started the run with a 3-pointer, and Livingston followed with a layup. Beck ended the second quarter with six points, thanks to a pair of 3-pointers. ISU went to the locker room at halftime trailing by two points, 25-23.

Crump tied the game, 25-25, with a jump shot from just outside the paint to start the third quarter. The teams traded baskets for the next several minutes, until the Cougars took a four-point lead. They kept that lead to end the quarter, and headed into the final 10 minutes with a 41-37 advantage.

The Cougars started the fourth quarter with a 6-0 run to increase their lead to 10 points, at 47-37. The Cougars’ run was fueled by layups from Donshel Beck and Gwen Adams, before back-to-back layups from Lauren White. Illinois State was never able to recover from the Cougars’ late run.

The Redbirds travel to Chicago on Saturday to take on No. 18 DePaul. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
