SAN ANTONIO – In his first three seasons as Illinois Wesleyan, Bryce Dolan was one of the most prolific three-point shooters in school history.

Now in his senior year, Dolan has expanded his game by driving to the basket more.

“I feel like I’ve always had the ability to get to the basket,” Dolan said. “I didn’t need to in years prior. This year it’s more pressing for me to get to the hoop.”

Titans’ coach Ron Rose said Dolan is being called upon to be more than a jump shooter while also shouldering more of the ball-handling responsibilities to take some of the defense’s focus off of him.

“You start looking at his career and season statistics, right away you realize what a great shooter he is,” Rose said. “He’s kind of a marked man now.”

Dolan ranks eighth all-time in IWU history with 148 three-pointers, including a school record-tying eight in a 37-point performance in a loss to Ohio Wesleyan earlier this month.

His 16 points per game ties him Trevor Seibring for the team lead in scoring and he’s tied for sixth best in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.

Dolan, a Washington, Mo. native, is seeking to fill the void in more ways than one for Dylan Overstreet, a three-year all-CCIW performer.

“As the leadership role has changed, I’ve had to step up along with Mike (Marietti),” Dolan said. “We have quite a bit of experience. Just having a different voice on the team, it’s obviously been different without Dylan, but I feel like I’ve kind of flowed into it.”

San Antonio

The Titans play the first of two games in San Antonio at 3 p.m. Friday against Southwestern University and 5 p.m. Saturday against No. 25 Texas Lutheran. WJBC 1230 AM and WJBC.com will have carry both games live.

Junior Spencer Seibring left the team after the loss to Chicago on Monday. He scored three points in four games this season.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
